Join us July 4th for: Worldtalks, Freedom comes from within

“Freedom comes from within”

Keti Koti takes place on July 1st. This year we commemorate 150 years of the abolition of slavery in the Dutch colonies. After years of resistance, the situation created by the Dutch kingdom turned out to be unsustainable and the abolition of slavery was inevitable. The freedom gained at the time came from within. Although the Keti Koti celebration is often approached from a Dutch perspective, the trend to shift the perspective to that of the former enslaved is here to stay. After all, the acquired freedom through resistance and protest, came from within.

How do we commemorate this event? Should Keti Koti continue to exist as a demarcated commemoration? Why is such a commemoration so important? And how do we actually visualize the shift in perspective; that freedom comes 'from within'?

Journalist Natascha van Weezel dives into this topic with her two guests:

  • Artist Richard Kofi made the performances Mi Alma en La Sirene, together with his partner, showing that the history of slavery, the colonial past and how we perceive freedom in this day and age are intertwined.
  • Dr. Emmanuel Akwasi Adu-Ampong, from Wageningen University & Research, explains how stories and visible heritage of the past can connect people in the face of future perspective.

Wageningen45 renews World Talks in collaboration with Wageningen University and Research
In 2025 we hope to cherish 80 years of freedom in the Netherlands. In the coming years, those who directly witnessed World War II, the veterans and the eyes and ears of the liberation in 1945, will be taken from us and we are storing their testimonies in our collective memory.

But what of those who are making a difference today and tomorrow? We are asking them to share their role in cherishing and protecting freedom and we will learn together what our own role can be in this, in a series of global conversations - World Talks.

You are invited to join the second World Talk in the series 'Freedom: a future perspective' on
Tuesday July 4th, from 19.30 – 22.00 at Hotel de Wereld.
